Longwood Gardens: Du Pont's 1,077-Acre Gift
Longwood Gardens: Du Pont's 1,077-Acre Gift
45 minutes west of Philadelphia in Kennett Square. 1,077 acres of gardens, conservatories, and fountains developed by Pierre S. du Pont with the conviction that a garden could be both scientific institution and public joy.
The Main Fountain Garden: 1,719 jets shooting water 175 feet, choreographed to music on select evenings. Versailles would envy it. The Conservatory covers 4.5 acres under glass — orchids, palms, seasonal displays. The Christmas installation (500,000 lights, 1,600 poinsettias) is among the country's most spectacular. Outdoor gardens organized by theme, each a different mood.
Timed entry $25-30, book online. Budget three hours minimum. The drive through the Brandywine Valley pairs with the Brandywine River Museum of Art (Wyeth paintings in a converted gristmill) for a full day.
